Luminous

Not a single sunbeam reaches Rjukan in winter time. Because of the high mountains, the Norwegian town sees no sun from October to March. In 1913 a suggestion was made: Set up a large mirror on the mountain top to reflect sunlight down to the valley floor. Not until a hundred years later the sun mirror was built.

The Norwegian photographer Jon Martin Austad went to Vestfjord to explore the three 17 square meter big mirrors which lights up a small spot in downtown Rjukan. This was the start of his art project «Luminous» – a black and white series where Austad explores different light settings: The reflected, the direct, or the lack of light, and how the light affect how we contemplate landscapes.
